UEI (Unique Entity Identifier)

The Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is a 12-character alphanumeric code assigned to every entity registered in SAM.gov. It replaced the DUNS number as the standard business identifier for government contracting.

How It Works

The UEI is automatically assigned when you register in SAM.gov — there is no separate application process. Every entity that wants to do business with the federal government, receive grants, or register as a sub-awardee needs a UEI. The transition from DUNS to UEI was completed in April 2022.

Example

When registering on SAM.gov, a company receives UEI QJKL9M4P3T7R. They use this identifier on all federal proposals, contract documents, and grant applications.
